Disappointed in the J Crew Celosia Cardi in Wild Plum

I really like the style of the J Crew Celosia cardigan and kick myself for not buying more in the Fall. So when I saw this cardigan available for Spring my only decision was on which color or colors to get. Out of them all I liked the Wild Plum the best. The color looked so beautiful and saturated.

I was going through my closet to see all the things I would wear it with. I was really excited about this color! And then it arrived in the mail yesterday.

See the difference. The picture is the best I could take with my camera and get the best color. It’s dull and faded, like I accidentally washed it in the machine and then dried it on Super Hot. I know companies have all the fancy lighting and cameras and make their goods appealing so you’ll buy them but this truly is not the same color. So it’s going back.

Here are my other purchases.
Perfect-Fit Cascade Tee in Sheer Lilac, size Small oops, I mean Medium.
I like this. The “ruffles” are little more tame than the Tissue Garland Tank.
Linen Cotton Overstitch Tank in Heather Stone, size Small
I bought it to go with the Scalloped Zipper Cardigan but I realize that I have other things that go with it just fine. It’s going back too.

And, of course, the Vintage Bateau Top in Dark Pewter, size Small. It’s now on back-order until 6/15 in this color and the Pale Camel. I have the navy and bright pink from a few seasons ago.

So that’s it. Two are going back. I’m still so sad about the Wild Plum. Maybe if I take a picture outside it will look better?

What a bummer about the cardigan! I can definitely tell from the picture that it's a little off in color. It's more of a "blue" tone than it is pictured online. Sadness.

Love love love the bateau top on you, and the cascade tee is so cute! Is the fit on it the same as other pf tees? And even though the overstitch tee is going back, what did you think of it? How's the fit? I really like it in the hydrangea color, and I live in tanks over the summer. Thanks 🙂

That is a big difference in the color! Very dull and much more purple instead of the bright plummy color, I can see why you were disappointed.

The bateau looks great on you and I do love the tank with the ruffle zipper cardi, it matches perfectly (and I love my matching)!

Yes AppGal, sadness. The Cascade Tee is actually a Medium and the fit is great. I normally take a Medium and I think the Small could have been a little tight in the bust if I had gotten it.

I like the overstitch tee but should have probably gotten a Medium in that. The small is a little tight in the bust. It is really comfortable though.

    Hope that helps!

Thank you Kathy. You're always so sweet.

I'm getting sick of J.Crew and their online photo doctoring! I've had to return a bunch of stuff over the past few months because colors turn out to be so different to what the website shows. I get the lighting and stuff, but sometimes, colors aren't anywhere close. I ordered a pair of "pink" khakis and they turned out to be "khaki" khaki. Those didn't bother me, but there was no smidgen of pink in them. URGH.

    Rant over!!

Cloggsy – I guess I'm sort of glad to know I'm not the only one who's experienced this but you are right. Pink is so not in the khaki color family. Maybe the pink was inside around the waistband? You know how JC likes to add fun little prints.

I love the cascade tee. The pink is pretty on you. I'd return the cardi, too. That's a huge color difference. The eye doesn't lie. It's not going to look much different in outdoor lighting. The photo shoot version may have been more saturated. When they went to manufacturing, they cheapened on the dye amt. 😉

Sorry the cardigan is not the color you were expecting, its so cute though. I really love the scalloped zipper cardigan, I have been getting into cardigans lately and I am always looking for one that has some stand out details.

I just sold my violet greta coat from last year this week. When I got it, I was expecting the pretty, rich pansy purple they were showing online. Instead, the coat was much less blue and more grape soda purple. Yuck!

I had a similar issue with the marzipan and cashmere cardis in the periwinkle blue. It looked like a true blue online and was really purple IRL. Pretty, and yes, in keeping with the color name, but not as pictured.

That being said, I am more likely to order the celosia in that color after seeing your IRL picture. It is very close to the aubergine sweater I purchased before the holidays that I wear constantly. I actually prefer the color it is, but I understand your disappointment.

Yes the vintage slub vneck tee in wild plum looks amazing online but got to the store & the color is nothing like the saturated purple online:(

kitsmommy – I'm glad it will work for you. That's why I like when others post IRL pics. You get to see color, fit, and style a whole lot better. If my expectations had been different I probably would have kept it.

Too bad about the Wild Plum. It really is 'dull' in comparison to JC's website version.

I have the navy striped boatneck from 2007 too and the shirts are just about identical aside from sleeve length and stitching.

Thank you for the reviews and pictures. They're very helpful.

thanks for the review on the cardi. I love the picture online, but in reality, it looks nothing like that! How annoying and a waste of time!

crazy about that cardi… they should at least be able to tell you whether it is a "blue" purple (one you got) or a warmer "red" purple…their on-line photo! Wonder if the fabric dye lots are off.
